Dog agility is one of the most exciting and rewarding dog sports in Australia. It is a fast paced activity where a handler guides their dog through a timed obstacle course made up of jumps, tunnels, weave poles and contact equipment.

At its core, agility is all about teamwork. Dogs run the course off lead, responding to their handler’s voice and body cues. The goal is to complete the course as quickly and accurately as possible, without knocking bars or missing obstacles.

What skills does a dog need?

Agility is not just about speed. It is about communication, focus and confidence. Dogs need to be willing to work with their handler, be able to concentrate in busy environments, and have the physical ability to safely navigate obstacles. Confidence is key, especially when learning equipment like tunnels or elevated contact obstacles.

How do competitions work?

Agility competitions are held across Australia, often on weekends through local clubs and canine associations. Courses are designed by judges and change every time, meaning no two runs are the same.

Dogs compete in different height categories and levels, starting from beginner (often called Novice) through to more advanced classes. Each run is judged on time and faults, with penalties for mistakes such as knocking a jump or taking the wrong obstacle.

When can dogs start agility?

Puppies can begin learning basic agility skills early, focusing on foundation training like body awareness, recall and confidence building.

However, full agility equipment and competition usually start from around 18 months of age, once a dog is physically mature and able to handle the impact safely.

What training is involved?

Most people get started through local dog training or agility clubs. Training focuses on teaching dogs how to perform each obstacle safely, while handlers learn how to guide their dog clearly and effectively.

Basic obedience is helpful before starting, but many clubs will support beginners from the ground up.

What breeds can do agility?

One of the best things about agility is that it is open to all dogs. While you might often see breeds like Border Collies or Kelpies excelling at high levels, any dog can participate.

From small companion breeds to larger working dogs, agility is about having fun, building confidence and strengthening the bond between dog and owner.

Why try agility?

Agility is a great outlet for both physical and mental energy. It helps keep dogs fit, engaged and happy, while also giving owners a fun and rewarding way to connect with their dog.

Whether you are interested in competing or just looking for something new to try, agility is a fantastic sport for dogs of all shapes, sizes and experience levels.
